Our Story
The germinating seed for this idea was unconsciously sown many summers ago playing soccer; at a soccer field in which cows roamed, local kids played bare feet, and teams were divided not by jerseys, but shirt and skin. In Sri Lanka, as the sun went down and the hot and humid air with it, we played soccer, in a game of pure comrade and unity - an unforgettable experience for my brother and I. This was our wake up call, an awakening to the realization of how much more privileged we are, and a call to share.
We then took the first step, to provide soccer equipment to such youth overseas and in the US. The success achieved and confidence garnered gave momentum and compulsion to continue this work.
In Kandiyapita village, with our local partner, Born Free Foundation, Sri Lanka, we began our first work to bring digital learning resources to support a self-directed education model that involves community-based, innovative and collaborative initiatives, so village youth can become knowledgeable leaders competent at solving their own ecological, social, health, education, and societal challenges. As a first step, we have brought laptops and a computer lab with internet access. We are also supporting the school with English and computer skills develpment. The computer facility was officially opened in August 2012.
We are also working with the Katunayake Lighthouse school where we donated computers in 2014, After donating soccer equipment to the Pitipana School in an impoverished coastal fishing village, we are presently fundraising for a computer lab for this school, and plan to make these donations in December 2015.
