The Kandiyapita Nalanda primary school is geographically isolated in a rural setting at the edge of the Udawalawe elephant sanctuary. In the impoverished region, the villagers have been rice farmers for generations. Economic and educational inequalities leave students with limited opportunity to a modern 21st century education. The school with students from grades 1-8, has two small buildings, open to the environment, with only half-walls. In 2011, when we collaborated with the village school, neither students, staff, or villagers had ever used a computer, let alone owned one.

In 2011, we partnered locally with Dr. Jayantha of the Born Free Sri Lanka Foundation who had expertise working with rural communities, and the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization. With our fundraising efforts for laptops and supporting peripherals, the village took similar initiative and built their first computer lab with donated labor and supplies,
